Spells

  • Purify food and drink is a level-0 cleric and druid spell that can essentially preserve food indefinitely. While this keeps the perishables fresh, flavorful, and useful for centuries if necessary, the nutritional value slowly fades over time. Preserved foods become gradually less effective between 10x and 100x normal shelf life, until they are no more nutritious than conjured foodstuffs. The fertility of preserved seeds follows a similar trajectory.
  • Fabricate is a 5th-level sorcerer/ wizard spell that is an invaluable aid to a powerful band of adventurers who need to establish or sustain a settlement quickly to do so with minimal effort. A single casting can turn more than 100 cubic feet of grain or beans into flour.

Magic Items

  • Cloth of preservation: This fabric protects anything it completely encloses with a purify food and drink effect. It typically measures 3′ × 3′, though larger samples may be used in castles, keeps, and temples.
  • Cask of preservation: This cask protects its contents with a continuous purify food and drink effect as long as the cask is closed and intact.
  • Miller’s sieve: This is a finely-crafted bronze or polished wooden hopper with a brass or spidersilk screen at the bottom. When the hopper is filled with suitable materials and a command word is spoken, the materials pass effortlessly through the screen, and in the process are broken down into fine pieces of a size set by the screen. The magic performs on command up to 3 times per day. Each hopper is designed for material of a specific hardness, and attempting to mill unsuitable materials will block or ruin the screen. This is typically used to produce flour when powerful wizards choose to found a settlement and do not care to build a mill, though sieves exist for milling stone, metal, and gems for alchemical use.
